For God is not unjust so as to forget your work and the love which you have shown toward His name, in having ministered and in still ministering to the saints. And we desire that each one of you show the same diligence so as to realize the full assurance of hope until the end, so that you will not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.
Hebrews 6:10-12
Christians inherit the promises of God through faith and patience. Our faith is imperative for without it we cannot please God (Hebrews 11:6). And our patience comes from the knowledge that this life is not all that there is. Rather, as believers, we possess eternal life. So what are the promises of God in which we place our faith? Consider just a few of these promises below:
Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’”
John 7:37-38
There is an open invitation for anyone who is spiritually thirsty to come and drink. This word picture demonstrates that as we find ourselves spiritually bankrupt, we can come to the only One who can give us spiritual life, Jesus Christ. Everyone who believes (trusts) in Him, rivers of living water will flow from their lives. This is done through the presence of the Holy Spirit in the life of the believer.
Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.
Matthew 11:28
When we are tired and weary in this life, again, we can come to the only One who can give us spiritual rest. And as we enter into a relationship with God through Jesus Christ, we can then rest in the provision and protection that He provides, even when we fail.
For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him.
John 3:16-17
Everyone who believes (trusts) in Jesus will not perish rather they will possess eternal life the very moment that they come into relationship with Him. God sent Christ into this world not for the purpose of condemning us rather for the purpose of saving us.
“And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to Myself.”
John 12:32
When Jesus went to the cross, He was lifted up. Jesus says that as a result, He will draw all mankind to Himself. He desires a relationship with us but this offer of salvation and eternal life must be received. Love always demands a response and we have been given the freedom to either receive or reject our Creator and Savior.
The Spirit and the bride say, “Come.” And let the one who hears say, “Come.” And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who wishes take the water of life without cost.
Revelation 22:17
Even at the end of scripture, we still see this offer extended to anyone who desires to receive eternal life. Anyone who wishes to take the water of life can and it is without cost meaning that we cannot buy it, earn it, or assist God’s finished work of salvation through Jesus Christ.
…that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation. For “Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
Romans 10:9-10, 13
Our righteousness comes from our faith (Romans 4:4-5). Our salvation comes as we confess with our mouths the reality that Jesus is Lord, that He is the Son of God (1 John 4:15). This faith coupled with our confession indicates that we belong to God and that we are a part of His eternal kingdom.
“For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who beholds the Son and believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will raise him up on the last day.”
John 6:40
This is the will of God…that everyone who beholds the Son (which indicates a relationship with Him) and everyone who believes (trusts) in Him will have eternal life. And Jesus Himself will raise us up on the last day to live with God forever.
These are just a few of the promises of God that, as believers, we can rest in, enjoy, and in which we can rejoice. Have you come to know the Savior? Why not call on Him today!
