The Psalms are a collection of songs written about the greatness of God and His powerful ability to deliver us in whatever situation we might find ourselves. Perhaps the most beloved of all of these writings is David’s picturesque description of the Lord found in Psalm 23. Having been a shepherd himself, David knew the attributes and duties surrounding that of a shepherd. It was a dangerous and challenging job yet considered one of the lowest positions one could take. No doubt David reflected on his own shepherding experience as he pondered the attributes, character, and nature of God.
In what has become one of the most quoted Psalms, Psalm 23 contains word pictures designed to bring us into a deeper appreciation for what God has done for us in Christ and what He continues to do for those who are born again believers in Jesus. As Christians, we can personalize the images and descriptions found in this Psalm and apply them directly to our lives since we belong to the very same God in which David is writing. All scripture is worth our time but I believe that spending time with and meditating on Psalm 23 will bring us into a closer walk with Christ.
Beginning today, I would like to challenge you to carve out 23 days and devote them to the study of Psalm 23. Because of its brevity, I would suggest committing it to memory. Also, meditate on each and every phrase, reflecting on your own life and how God has shown Himself faithful in each and every circumstance. I believe that as we make the next 23 days a priority, we will grow into a more intimate and deeper understanding of the One who truly is our Great Shepherd!
