Walking On High Places

The Lord God is my strength, and He has made my feet like hinds’ feet, and makes me walk on my high places.

                                                                                                               Habakkuk 3:19

When we read the prophet Habakkuk, we see a man greatly troubled. What he was seeing happening around him and what he believed about God were seemingly in conflict. Most of us can probably relate to a time when we were questioning the very workings of God. Perhaps we were seeing others prospering and enjoying the favor of God while our lives seem to be lacking any significant spiritual fervor. As Habakkuk looked around and saw all that was happening, he asked of God the simple question, “Why?” It was in this posture that Habakkuk made a decision to praise God and to continue to trust in Him regardless of the circumstances.

“The Lord God is my strength.” That is the declaration of the prophet Habakkuk. And accompanying that strength are two word pictures that describe the person who enjoys God and His favor. Habakkuk’s feet were like “hinds’ feet” and his steps were on high places. Let’s take a closer look at these two biblical concepts.

  1. Making our feet like “hinds’ feet”

“Hinds’ feet” refer to the steps of a female deer. She is able to place her hind feet in exactly the same position as her front steps allowing her to elude predators and to escape from danger. Habakkuk knew that the Lord would allow his feet to be like the hinds’ feet of the deer. We see this same sentiment echoed in the Psalms:

He makes my feet like hinds’ feet and sets me upon my high places.

                                                                                                Psalm 18:33

When we trust in the Lord, we find ourselves able to rest securely in His protection and His provision.

  1. Making us walk on “high places”

High places are the places of God. When we view life through the lens of human depravity and conventional wisdom, we become greatly limited. But when we begin to look through the lens of the truth of God’s Word, we can begin to have spiritual victory.

Walking on high places means that we are walking with God. That He is the One guiding our steps and setting our feet on the solid rock of Jesus Christ. He is the One who makes us adequate for service in His kingdom (2 Corinthians 3:4-6). He is the One who is able to make us worthy of our calling (2 Thessalonians 1:11-12). And He is the One able to strengthen us with all power in our innermost being (Ephesians 3:16). Consider the words of Paul regarding the life of a believer:

Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

                                                                                                            Romans 15:13

Believers should be full of the Spirit. It is God’s Spirit that brings about the hope, joy, peace, and power that Paul speaks of in this passage.

When we trust in the Lord, we find ourselves able to accomplish things of which we never could have dreamed.

Regardless of our circumstances, we can make the choice to praise God and enjoy His presence and favor. When we do this, we will find that He is able to make our feet like hinds’ feet and we will walk on His high places!
