Who is a God like You, who pardons iniquity and passes over the rebellious act of the remnant of His possession? He does not retain His anger forever, because He delights in unchanging love. He will again have compassion on us; He will tread our iniquities under foot. Yes, You will cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.
Micah 7:18-19
It is an amazing truth…God is willing to pardon our sin. When we think about God, we might be tempted to attached human characteristics to Him such as being irritable, impatience, or unkind. But these are human characteristics that are rooted in our sin nature. When we get tired and cranky, we might verbally lash out at someone or say rude and hurtful things. At times, we simply are not on our best behavior. But God is not like this. He is eternal and unchanging. Consider the following:
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.
Hebrews 13:8
“For I, the Lord, do not change; therefore you, O sons of Jacob, are not consumed.”
Malachi 3:6
Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow.
James 1:17
God is unchanging. Jesus Christ will remain the same throughout eternity. He was present during creation (Colossians 1:15-17) and He continues to intercede for us as our great high priest (Hebrews 4:14-16).
God’s testimony of Himself is that He does not change. It is because of His constant willingness to forgive and pardon that we are given hope to continue living in His grace and mercy.
And every perfect gift comes from Him. God does not change in His willingness to give what is good to those who ask (Matthew 7:11) for He does not change like the shifting of the shadows.
The Bible is full of passages describing God as a loving, benevolent, unchanging God. So when we consider His greatness, holiness, and righteousness, we must also include the reality that He is also an unchanging God.
