The Fruit Of The Spirit: An Introduction

The Christian life should be lived in a very different manner than the rest of the world. In other words, believers in Jesus Christ should positively impact their surroundings and the people in whom they come in contact. A Christian life should be one of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Of course, this is not done through self-determination rather it is only when we yield ourselves to the power of the Spirit of God that we begin to see these characteristics flow out of our hearts. These are not things that we do for God rather they are the evidence of His presence in our lives thus they are called the Fruit of the Spirit. All nine attributes should be present in our lives but for the purposes of study, the following is a suggestion on how we might group these qualities:

Peace With God

Love-to be loved by God & to love others

Joy- to have the joy of God in your heart resulting in joyful living

Peace- to know that, ultimately, all things will work out

Peace With Others

Patience-having an even temper with other people

Kindness-exemplifying a general kindness in the way you handle people

Goodness-being generous and benevolent

Peace With Yourself

Faithfulness-keeping your word, being a man or woman of honor

Gentleness-possessing humility

Self-Control- an ability to show restraint

No amount of law keeping, positive thinking, or self-determination will bring about this result. Only the Holy Spirit, given as a gift from God to those who belong to Jesus Christ, can bring about this change in a fallen person. Thus these are the Fruit of the Spirit.
