Worth Our Time

Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile an account of the things accomplished among us, just as they were handed down to us by those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and servants of the word, it seemed fitting for me as well, having investigated everything carefully from the beginning, to write it out for you in consecutive order, most excellent Theophilus; so that you may know the exact truth about the things you have been taught.

                                                                                                         Luke 1:1-4

Today: Read Luke 1

Theophilus is the individual to whom Luke is addressing in the beginning of his gospel. Although we do not know the exact identity of this person, the title that Luke uses tells us a great deal. Theo from the Greek means God while philos can be translated as friend. This title reveals someone who could be thought of as a friend of God. Some have suggested translating it as “one who loves God” or even possibly “the one who God loves.” Whichever it may be, I believe that Theophilos was a believer as was Luke.

The account of the things that happened during the earthly life of Christ was investigated by Luke and recorded in what follows as the Gospel of Luke. In God’s sovereign way, this account was preserved and placed into the larger canon of scripture. This gospel is worth our time not only because it reveals Jesus’ teachings and instructions on life, when accompanied by the Holy Spirit, Luke, just like all of the books of the Bible, acts as a means by which we can gain spiritual insight and receive spiritual strength. But today’s passage reveals the reason why believers should stay immersed in the Word, to know the exact truth. Every authentic Christian has a personal relationship with Christ as well as the Spirit of God dwelling within them. God has not left us to wonder if our faith is well placed. He has provided us with His Word, His promises, and His very presence.

I want to encourage you to commit to spending time in Luke during this 24-day study. Read a chapter each day and spend some time meditating on each passage that will be highlighted for the day. I believe as you make the study of God’s Word a priority in your life, you will be able to say that the time spent was well worth your time!
