Hungering And Thirsting For Righteousness (Pt 2)

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

                                                                                                         Matthew 5:6

For those who hunger and thirst for the things of God, the reality is that they will be satisfied. It makes no difference what we substitute for God, anything in this life that we desire more than God will ultimately fail to fulfill that void in our heart. The only One that can fill that void inside is Jesus. David was no stranger to the concept of being satisfied in God alone. Consider the following remarks from this “man after God’s own heart”:

You will make known to me the path of life; in Your presence is fullness of joy; in Your right hand there are pleasures forever.

                                                                                                     Psalm 16:11

Delight yourself in the Lord; and He will give you the desires of your heart.

                                                                                                Psalm 37:4

Who satisfies your years with good things, so that your youth is renewed like the eagle.

                                                                                                       Psalm 103:5

I believe the church should be speaking of and testifying about the satisfaction that comes from knowing God. Often we spend the majority of our time talking about how difficult or demanding the Christian life can be (and that is certainly true). But the payoff for those who are faithful is worth it! David speaks of real life, fullness of joy, and pleasures forever. He declares that our desires are given to us as we delight in God. He makes it clear that God will satisfy our years with good things. And the byproduct of God’s provision, our youth is renewed. Life, joy, pleasure, desires fulfilled, goodness, and renewal of strength describe the overarching reality that those who hunger for righteousness receive.

Jesus makes a declaration that whoever comes to Him will never hunger (spiritually) or thirst (spiritually) again. Consider His proclamation:

Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst.”

                                                                                                           John 6:35

Notice the criteria for this spiritual satisfaction: coming to Christ and believing in Him. We bring nothing to the table other than ourselves. Once we receive salvation from Him, we are on the road to spiritual satisfaction. He spoke a similar word to the woman at the well:

“…but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.”

                                                                                                            John 4:14

Are you satisfied with your life? Have the things of the world grown stale and unfulfilling? Jesus is the bread of life and He invites us to come and eat. He is the living water and He beckons us to come and drink. Satisfaction is available as we yield ourselves to the Savior!

Happy are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied!
