Psalm 150: Praising God!

Praise the Lord! Praise God in His sanctuary; Praise Him in His mighty expanse.
Praise Him for His mighty deeds; Praise Him according to His excellent greatness. Praise Him with trumpet sound; Praise Him with harp and lyre. Praise Him with timbrel and dancing; Praise Him with stringed instruments and pipe. Praise Him with loud cymbals; Praise Him with resounding cymbals. Let everything that has breath praise the Lord. Praise the Lord!

                                                                                                            Psalm 150:1-6

An important part of the Christian life is that of worship. While there is no set style or format for worship, it remains a foundational part of enjoying life. Whether we worship with other believers or in private, we were made to worship. Connecting with the Creator is a privilege and is made possible by the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The veil has been torn (Matthew 27:51) and we can now approach the throne of grace with confidence (Hebrews 4:16). With God as our Father, Jesus as our Savior, and the Holy Spirit as our guide, Christians can truly enjoy fellowship with God and have an intimate relationship with Him…and all of this is experienced through worship.

Today’s Psalm suggests praising God for His wonderful creation by stating, “Praise God in His sanctuary, praise Him in His mighty expanse.” Enjoying a walk in the forest or on the beach, looking up and being captivated once again with the stars in the night sky, or just finding that place of solitude, praising God for His wonderful creation is an act of worship. The Psalmist also suggests praising God for His character and nature. He writes, “Praise Him for His mighty deeds, praise Him for His excellent greatness.” If you have experienced the saving power of God in your life, then you are certainly positioned to praise Him for His “excellent greatness.”

For some, music plays a big role in worship. I like the fact that this Psalm includes most, if not all, of the major groupings of musical instruments. While I’m sure the instruments used back then differ somewhat from today’s instruments, the Psalmist still encourages the use of any or all of them. Praising God with trumpets, stringed instruments, the pipe, and loud and resounding cymbals represents the brass, strings, woodwinds, and percussion sections. Regardless of your musical preference, music can play a major role in praising God.

We were made to worship. As we wind down another month, I would like to encourage you to begin each day with a time of reflection and praising God. Worship Him through prayer, worship Him through song, and worship Him through the study of His word.
